Google’s “Mobile Friendly Update” and What it Means for Your Site

Google's mobile friendly update

When users are searching the internet on their mobile devices Google wants to show them the most relevant results. Beginning April 21, 2015, Google is now adding “mobile friendliness” as a ranking factor. Google has specifically said that this change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and that “it will have a significant impact in our search results.”

Google’s ultimate goal is to make it easier for users to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their mobile devices. This is very important news especially for service businesses because a lot of local searches are done on mobile devices. If your website isn’t optimized for mobile devices you aren’t going to do as well in the search rankings.

What does this mean for you and your site?

This important update to Google’s ranking algorithm means that your website needs to be mobile friendly. If your website was recently built, it may already be mobile friendly and you might not have to worry. How do you know if it is? Look at your website on your mobile device and notice what happens. Does it change in appearance to fit your screen better or do you see the exact same site you’d see on a desktop computer?

Another way to check is to do an actual search for your business’s site on google and look at the search results. Google is now displaying “Mobile-friendly” text under the title of the page. If your site shows this text then you are in the clear. If not, you better get it looked at by a web designer as soon as possible if you don’t want your mobile rankings to plummet.
