Search engine optimization can be a scary term if you’re a handyman who doesn’t know much about internet marketing. I’m going to simplify it for you in this post though and show you that you actually can do this stuff and it doesn’t take a whole lot of knowledge to make some progress with your SEO efforts.

When it comes to your handyman website, you can obviously get more business if you show up in the search results for particular keywords that people are looking for in your area. Ideally, you want to show up on page one as high as possible. The whole idea behind SEO is to make sure your website is optimized in multiple ways to help it show up as high as possible in Google (and Bing and Yahoo).

The most important things to focus on

This article could really get out of hand if I tried to discuss every aspect of SEO so instead, I’ll show you what the most important steps are to increasing your website’s rankings through search engine optimization. The strategies discussed below are tested strategies that I use on my own sites as well as client sites so I know these things work. None of this is SEO theory, all of this works if you put it to use.

Local factors

Since you run a handyman business, I’m going to first discuss the local factors that help you rank higher. These things will not only help your website rank higher but they’ll also help you show up in more areas online to have even greater visibility.

Google My Business listing

Google My Business (formerly Google Places) is where businesses create free local listings on Google so they show up on maps as well as the organic search results. This will greatly help increase your overall web presence and certainly shouldn’t be ignored. If you don’t create a google places listing you are most certainly leaving money on the table.

There are tons of tips for creating a Google My Business listing but the general idea is to create the listing, fill in as much information as you can with pictures and a link to your website. The more information you can include the better.

Other directory listings (Yelp, Bing, Yahoo, etc)

After your Google My Business listing is created, you’ll also want to create local listings on as many other directories as you can. Every listing you create is a citation that shows Google that your information is true and accurate. This gives Google even more reason to show your website and local listing higher than the others.

There’s no doubt, this is a lot of work and is time consuming. Take it one step at a time. Commit to creating 1 or 2 listings a day if you want to break it up into smaller, more manageable chunks. On to your actual website

If you create a Google My Business listing and a bunch of other directory listings like I mention above, you’ll be in a good position to now start ranking locally. But we haven’t yet talked about your actual website. There are many things you can do to search engine optimize your handyman website. Again, to keep this concise, I’m going to only focus on the most important and I’m going to be brief with each one just to give you a starting point. I’ve written other posts that go into detail about each one of these points.


Your website absolutely has to have a substantial amount of content if you want to rank well. Your content needs to be targeted to the keywords you are looking to show up for. That means every time you create more content on your site, you need to do it with the intention of including the keywords that you want to rank for.

Don’t overdo it though. Your content must be perfectly readable by humans so don’t make the mistake of thinking the only thing of importance is to rank high. You need to make sure that once someone lands on your page that they stick around and then decide to use your business.


This goes along with content but you need to figure that you’re going to need to have a page for every main keyword that you want to rank for. If you want to show up when someone is looking for ceiling fan installation in your city then you’ll need to create a page targeted to the keyword phrase. You’ll need to do this for every keyword that you want to rank for.

You might start thinking that means you’ll probably have a lot of pages on your site. You bet!

Don’t think that this needs to be done all on day one. This is a long term process. It takes time to create quality content on your site. Commit to creating a new page on your site once a week or do it at whatever schedule works best for you. You’ll soon see that your pages will start ranking and you’ll start brining in business for the keywords that you’ve started to rank for. It’s actually pretty fun to see this happen.

On page SEO

Without getting overly detailed, you want to make sure your keywords are in the important parts of your pages. The title, H1, H2, and maybe even H3 tags, and the body of the content. Do this on every page you create. It will get easier as you create more pages. WordPress sites like ours make this pretty easy.


If you focus on the things listed above there’s really no way you can’t win at SEO for your handyman website. In fact, handyman SEO is just like SEO for any other local business, just different keywords but the techniques are exactly the same.
